install A/C in horizontal window
« on: May 17, 2012, 04:39:29 PM »
i see window air conditioners on sale tomorrow, but i have horizontal sliding windows, does anyone know if there is an easy way to install it, or do i have to use plywood or plexiglass to fill the opening above it? i don't think there is an easy way.

Over here in the U.K air conditioners are rarely for domestic use.  Probably because the day or 3 that we actually do get some sun, we tend to endure enjoy it while it lasts.

Do you have Sash (I believe they're called "double hung" over the pond) windows that you want to install the unit into?  Which model is it?  I may be able to come up with a solution with a bit more info as I specialise in window fitting.

its an old window, basically 2 sliding panes of glass in wooden slots with the little knob in the glass to slide open and closed. the window is approx 74 high x 120 wide centimeters, and the opening is approx 54 wide (74 high). i can take a few pics of it tomorrow if you want (its dark now). window is in bottom half of split entry home. here's the specs on the A/C
http://s3.amazonaws.com/sc-specsheets/DAC5111M_spec.pdf, its on sale for $88. still just debating it, its not very powerful, so i'd have to keep the door closed. living on an island, it gets very humid, plus we get lots of sun, and the picture window (opposite this one) doesn't open, so no cross breeze.

So they are just glass panes that slide left and right and you push up to remove?

The unit you are buying is very heavy to it would have to be solidly fixed into timber at least, as I don't think even 6mm perspex would hand that kind of weight.

I don't know how handy you are, but I would personally make a lining for the aperture, then I would divide a section off on the left or right which would hold an 18mm board housing the air conditioner, and finally convert the other space to a casement window so you still retain the function of an open window.  It might sound complicated but in truth it just a few bits of timber and a couple of hinges.

Thanks Smokes. i'm not that handy at carpentry stuff, i was more handy at the car stuff (but now their all chips, sensors, and computers). they only possible plus, is that since the window (frame) is on top of the foundation wall, the thickness of the sill it sits on is 26 centimeters, and solid. i'll probably just skip it, it's no big deal, i have lots of fans  ;D

No problem Townie.  If you change your mind, send me the exact dimensions and I'll draw you up a design and cutting list.

Nah, a cutting list is just a list of the components and their dimensions.  You could take it into a Timber merchant and they cut the list for you.  All you'd have to do is screw it together and fit it.
