How to transfer 50 MB mp3 file
« on: April 05, 2013, 07:56:58 PM »
Hi
There is a sound file (not copyrighted material) that someone needs to send me but they can't fit it into an e-mail.  I suspect it's an mp3 file.  What is the best way to access it?

How big is it?  You can try compressing it (zipping it up) using WinZip or 7-Zip but mp3 are already pretty compressed IIRC.  DropBox is a very possible alternative to e-mailing the file.  I signed up a couple years ago and have 2GB of space on it.  Unless the MP3 is a full musical or double album or something, it should be more than enough.

Also, if you use this link to sign up, I get referral points :D.

It's 50mb.

I've sent them a link to another site that serves a similar purpose, but I signed up for an account so you could reap the benefits of the referral.  I've used dropbox before but think there's a limit and 50 mb is it.  I'll poke around and see if he can send it to me, if I have trouble, I'll try other stuff.  I may drive and simply get a cd from him.  It's really important, so there's considerable time pressure.

Dropbox is pretty rad, but I usually use skype to send files. I don't know if they pull some block cowpoo, I remember MSN messenger used to madam about MP3's.

Would SoundCloud be an option? I've never uploaded anything to it, but I've been getting tunes off of there.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I am waiting for the second party (the person with the file) to get back to me about it. Google Drive might also work, given it's not a huge file.  I've sent the suggestions and have to see what they think.

Doh, I see now that you put the size in the thread topic.   Hehe, I'm silly sometimes.

Thanks.  I subsequently discovered this and suggested both Dropbox and Google Drive to the person with the file.  I'm still waiting for a reply.  Hopefully I'll have the file in my hot little hands before the weekend is out.

We could always have a diasfora tracker for legit files.
Don't put off until tomorrow, what you can put off until the day after.

There is an exception to every rule, apart from this one.

You can always create/email a .torrent file. Set it to [Private] but they would have to install a torrent client.

You can use these trackers: I think the bottom one works best for me.

Yes, if this were a friend, I'd go with the torrent but this was more of a proper business transaction, so I felt I should go with an established service that didn't require the installation of any software.

Then Dropbox would probably be a good way to go.

Simple sharing
Shared folders allow people to work together on the same projects and documents.

Invite friends, family or teammates to a folder. It'll be as if you saved the folder to their computers.
    See other people's changes instantly.
Create photo galleries viewable by anyone you choose.
Send a link to any file in your Dropbox using your Public folder.
