both of my children children play Minecraft and as i Have a couple of old pc's and parts laying about I thought about making a server for them.
Internet is awash with information about setting one up using old pc's, but as a few of you here are pc knowledgeable, Just how easy is it.

Dweezy is obviously the man for this but I'm interested as to exactly you are trying to achieve? Will it be like a glorified "home network"?

Any computer can be a "server" but typically it'll have more resources available to it (faster cpu, lots of ram, fast hdds and/or redundancy using RAID (not 0).  I've actually never seen, let alone played, Minecraft so I'm not sure what all requirements a Minecraft server would need.

Basically kids and friends they allow to join, just to play Minecraft game.
Would run around my home network and to invited friends.
If still online I suppose i could access it to watch a film or two whilst on holiday ?
Not really sure what i could / couldn't do with an old pc set up as a server

Give it a go.  At the very least, it's a learning experience and those are always good.
