I believe they use "Focus Stacking" rather than macro photography.  Stacking is not so restrictive and gives you crisper images.  From what I have read at least.

Photo stacking
"Focus stacking is a powerful technique for extending a photo's apparent depth of field, It's perhaps most useful in close-up and macro photography, since the camera lens's highest f-stop is often insufficient to render everything in focus"

Quite a interesting and difficult set up to achieve.
Only have i seen better pictures on Big D from a botanist ?? ? who posted macro shots from where he worked in Hawaii shockingly good.  :) :)


no depth of field which afflicts most macro shots.


not macro but similar effect is used in HDR photo's, just alter the f-stop either side of the set level.

Such beautiful pics! Every photo I take from less than 1m (with any camera, mode, etc, etc) is blurred.  :D

Macro is very close range whereas Focus Stacking does not have to be.  I believe it works on the old principle used for sharpen images whereby you stack your images but only use certain data elements from each stack/layer.

I see what you mean though, you just meant the shot was close.
