I'm really sorry, goldie.  It's really hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet.

It sounds like the alternative is to let him experience extended suffering.  You are doing the best thing for him out of the best motivations.  Don't feel bad about making that choice.  I'm sure that you gave him a loving home and I'd focus on that.
