Let talk about VPN's
« on: June 12, 2016, 11:00:23 AM »
Just wondering how many of you connect through a virtual VPN? Seems to be alot of benefits but I honestly dont have the time to research it and I know a couple of you are always up on the latest and greatest tech experiences. And yes, one of the reasons I ask is connected to the site we all originally came from. Should I use a VPN and which one do you recommend?

I simply use Tunnelbear and only when I'm on the other side of the pond. I do this to watch U.K TV (or Sky Go to be precise) as that way we don't have a stack of stuff to come home to.

It's cheap and fast but I have no idea how affective it is for other, less innocuous, practices.

I thought about using VPNs but I never really saw the big benefit.  Sure, we use them at work to access our internal networks and smokes usage is valid to circumvent regional restrictions but for forum access and downloading, it didn't really seem beneficial.  Of course, by the time I started thinking about using them, I also wasn't really DLing anymore.

For forums, you have to log in anyway so who cares if they know your IP or not as they already have knowledge of your email address and possibly the password (depends on how they stored them).

For DLing, it would be effective to obscure your IP in swarms or from the DL site (as long as they VPN provider didn't keep their logs long).  I never really looked into them so I don't know if they were packaged like Internet providers, where some are unlimited and others have caps/quotas for speed/throughput.  In the day, I would have hit any kind of cap early in the month.  Also, VPNs add more hops to your route and your speed is only as good as your slowest hop.

Again, this is just my personal rambling on it and it has been a long time since I thought about it for something like this so might have changed.

Well speed is a definite issue. Im trying a free version of one now and if this is the future Im out. What smokes mentioned about being able to watch shows from other countries is a great idea. Many time Ive been cut out from trying to watch streams from the UK. I will be trying that asap. Banking was another issue for me personally. I had hoped to pick up some tips. I guess Im off to trial and error land.

That's where I live. Except the "trial and" bit.

"Trial and error" land is better than "trial and jail" land.
Bad jokes aside, the only 2 I've used are Tunnelbear and Hola!. I've only used them once in a while to watch BBC, etc and I haven't used any of them for at least a year so I'm probably of no help. I remember Hola! doing its job well. A while back I read criticism to Hola!. I only understand part of it though.

On that subject: if you try and tune into ITV (home of Downton) it asks for a postcode. I had read that people use Buckingham Palace's but I tried that and it failed.  Instead I used the one from my local Chinese takeaway.

The problem with Opera developer (with the VPN) is that networks a wise to it and don't support the browser. I don't think I could watch ABC from here using it.

i could be wrong.

I don't think those sites are going to sniff out your browser and kick you for using a VPN, if fact, they may well send you a medal. However, sites that are legitimately protecting their data is another thing.

I can't access USA TV from here using the Opera VPN, but in a few weeks when I'm in the Caribbean - did I mention I'm going to the Caribbean? - I'll try accessing some UK stuff while I'm there.

The one problem I did have with Tunnelbear is that it kept screwing up my network card/driver. To get it to work I had to uninstall both and then install the network card, then Tunnelbear and it would work until I turned the machine off and then the whole thing would start again when I turned it back on. This was last year when I was in St Lucia but since then I have reinstalled the system so I'm hopeful it won't recur.
