Netflix : Another life - SPOILERS
« on: August 06, 2019, 04:11:08 PM »
OK let me start with a score and I will work from there, I give "Another Life" a 2/10 and those two are for some of the visual effects in this.

OK on with the review.

Imagine if you will that an alien artifact lands on earth, immediately it lands it erects a huge crystal tower that nobody has the faintest idea of what it does or its purpose and you have the beginning of the worst show I have seen in ages. So such a monumental event would be World shattering yes? and yet they have one scientist and his team of two researchers trying to do a cross between "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Independence Day" type of attempted communication with the artifact (Lights and sounds), remarkably there are no other scientists bothering with this artifact which is bizarre...

Meanwhile Close encounters Scientists wife (Katee Sackhoff) leads a team of Americas Brightest and Best Scientists on a voyage to the planet that they believe this thing came from, please remember that they are the Brightest and the Best because they do such dumbass things that you need to be reminded frequently that these are supposed to be the Brightest and the Best, I will give examples below.

Q) you land on a rogue planet that has long broken its orbit from its original star and therefore the temperature on this rock is barely above that of open space, there is an atmosphere on this rogue planet so how do you test to see if it is breathable?

a) Use your scanners and instruments
b) Use a canary in a cage
c) Kick the least likeable character on board out of an air lock and watch what happens
d) Open the visor on your life preserving space suit and take a deep breath in

If you chose d you are a winner, yes the brightest and best scientists sent on this mission actually opened their helmet visors and took long copious breaths of that lovely atmosphere that is marginally above absolute zero, their lungs would have frozen instantly as if they had breathed in liquid nitrogen not to mention the possibility of dangerous poisonous gasses that will kill even in trace amounts.

Q) you land on another planet that clearly has life with forests everywhere, you are a bio specialist, do you

a) Wear a hazmat suit and proceed with caution to prevent accidental infection
b) Wear ordinary clothing hoping there is nothing infectious
c) Wear a clowns costume and juggle a few of the planets stranger flora for laughs
d) Start tasting the alien fruits and collecting any plants you think might get you shitfaced on their narcotic effects

Again if you selected d this happened in "Another Life"

And this is just the beginning of the litany of idiotic script writing for this show, honourable mentions  such as how all the experts are like a field study class of 11 year olds in their behaviour, no mention of how they knew where the artifact came from to launch a mission in the first place, stupid soldiers who decide to try and attack a thing that came from light years away with automatic rifles etc etc etc

The point of good Science Fiction is to get you to suspend your disbelief long enough to enjoy the story line "Another Life" fails abysmally, its constant gaffs,  errors or just plain lunacy keeps reminding your disbelief to hang around for the next stupid thing that is so stupid it bears no relationship to reality.

I really wanted to like this but it is a big steaming pile of festering garbage.

Sounds about par with that Riddick movie she was in.

Gotta say, the writers on BSG did a hell of a job pulling emotion out of her, because I haven't seen any since.
just one little time change so a draft board in 1968 turns down the bribe to accept "bone spurs" and we are home-free.

That was the last time she was in something good...

BTW the "Another Life" series does have a use as a drinking game, whenever anybody says or does something stupid people knock back a shot, I guarantee those people would be in hospital with alcoholic poisoning long before the credits on the first episode...

This sounds downright comical.  And here's what Wikipedia had to say about the critical reception:
Quote
Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes gave the series a rating of 6%, based on 16 critics' reviews with an average score of 4.54/10. The website's consensus reads, "A hodgepodge of science fiction homage, Another Life lacks the distinctive spark necessary to set it apart from the array of stories it aspires to be."[12] Metacritic calculated an average score of 33 out of 100, based on 8 reviews, citing "generally unfavourable reviews".

If I were a betting person, I'd take odds on it not being renewed for a second season.

I'm watching Stargate 1, lord help me, and there seems to be a similar lack of concern with contamination regarding alien environments and creatures in this program, too.

I guess you just have to suspend disbelief to watch most of these shows.  Soon, I won't have time, so I guess this is how I unwind late at night when there's nothing better to watch.  I doubt I'd be exploring Another Life any time soon.

My suspension of disbelief was regularly interrupted by stupid things in "Another Life" and since the entirety of the storyline hung on stupid events there was little to no story left once you ignored the stupid events...

I remember watching the original movie stargate and was blown away by it, SG1 a little less so but despite the stupid things in SG1 it was entertaining enough to keep people watching.

SG1 had humour, it was sometimes irreverent and over the top but it worked at the level of entertaining people, "Another Life" is like watching paint dry, yes occasionally they showed fantastic computer generated imagery but for the most part it is just a hotch potch of segments of other stories all losely stitched together in what amounts to be a TV show with all the appeal of doing your tax returns....

Hah hah, that contamination thing is gonna bite them in the ass right quick. You'll see. Well, if you decide to continue the show.

They actually have a robot called the MALP they send through the stargate before any team goes through. It checks atmosphere, temperature, and many other variables. It of course, happens to fail on occasion, but it does it's treaded, robot-y best. Essentially, SG1 through SG20 visit the worlds that have been scouted by the MALP.

Sometimes they send a flying version through. UAV MALP. I think the UAV MALP is pretty neat.

Great CGI can't carry a show. if it did, actors would be out of a job.

Unfortunately I was stupid enough to watch "Another Life" to its final episode thinking it has to get better, and whilst in comparison to the beginning and middle it did marginally get a little better when compared to other scifi  it was still dire trash...

Yes I remember the MALP in both stargate the movie and Stargate SG1 and thought at the time (That is how you do it) and while SG1 had gaffs of its own they were mainly forgiveable and didn't detract overly from the entertainment value of the show.

Ha.  Been there, done that.  I watched every gory episode of Earth: Final Conflict, hoping against hope it would stop sucking.  It never did.  That's a bunch of my life I won't get back.  I was watching The 100 until I finally gave up on the last season.  It was just too dull.

At least you can have the solace of knowing that we can learn from your mistake.
