Expanded Produce recall. (Continental US, California source)
« on: August 19, 2020, 06:19:50 PM »
I'm displeased by this. Since MAY there has been an onion recall for salmonella concerns.
They just widened it.

First site I could find without cowpoo autoplay video:

https://foodpoisoningbulletin.com/2020/which-stores-sold-onions-recalled-for-possible-salmonella/

Apparently a lot of people in Canada got sick because of these onions. This article was posted August 6th, but the recall is ongoing.

Good lord.  I have always relied on onions as an inexpensive staple for stir fry dishes and various other foods.  I picked up a shallot last week because the produce here (other than pineapples) is basically pathetic.  The onions looked terrible.  Now I'm glad I didn't buy any.

The celery also looks anemic and dried out.  And I love celery.  This is what happens when you have to import most of your food.  I need to check out more food chains, but with COVID and a lack of respect for social distancing in the stores, I tend to stay away when I can.

Yeah, 8ully.  This sort of amuses me.  I once thought of establishing a cottage industry business selling homemade preserves.  After attending workshops and learning more, I decided not to participate.  The main reason was that I would be restricted to using only fruit from USDA approved sources--purchased mostly from the grocery store or approved wholesalers.  I could not use the lemons or limes that I grew myself, nor could I pick wild blackberries or ornamental plums to use in preserves.  Also, I could not ship through the mail, but had to hand over the produce in person at the point of sale.   It seems these draconian measures were established for the sole protection and interests of large agribusiness concerns to insure there would be negligible competition.

I am very careful about food safety, so my jams are probably safer than any mass marketed product you might purchase from a grocery store. The corporate farming industry seems to have lax oversight as well as questionable safety practices.  So, now, you have lemons and limes as well as other produce (lettuce, onions, etc.) that are from USDA approved sources that are making people sick.  So that's worked out really well, right?
