I mean if they're introducing a genetic sequence, that could be the equivalent of conditions where you have to take a pill every day or die.

I had a friend who was very dire about his thyroid med. He said "Any societal instability leaves me in numb terror, because if I don't get my pill every three days if I stretch it, I'll just straight up die."

He was in a similar boat to me, responsible for an aging parent, so every cut in the safety net brought him dread. His dad was a civil engineer but got early onset dementia, so he's pretty much a homebody.

His hobby is exotic plants. Can't say I shared the interest, but the man lit the golly up over rare cuttings and getting them past customs (legally, he didn't sneak, he just learned every single facet of the law)

Just completed Dept Q (on netflix)
"A brash but brilliant cop becomes head of a new police department, where he leads an unlikely team of misfits in solving Edinburgh's cold cases."

Dept Q sounds interesting, so thanks, goldie.

Utopia was pretty much oppressive.  Bad "edgy" music, pornographic levels of violence, like "give it a rest, guys, we get it" levels.  And predictable ending.  Thank god I'm done with that.  I guess BBC 4 is supposed to be fresh and original.  This failed on all counts.  Good cast members, though.  So, kudos to BBC for giving them some more paying work.  Too bad it was for a train wreck of a series.

At the end of the day, there's always this:

The Cleaner is pretty entertaining.  I've seen 2 episodes.  A crime scene cleaner.  Light comedy.  A changing cast in each role.  So far Helena Bonham Carter and David Mitchell.

I'm enjoying Deutschland 1983 on amazon prime.  About an East German soldier who gets enlisted to spy on the West.  Great music from the period, too.

I've finally accepted Harry will never come home.
Should have hired that Watley kid instead of AJ.

I had to look those up.  The cast of Armageddon is pretty remarkable.  And it sounds like it's full of twists and turns.

I've been to Texas and everyone seems to drive a pickup truck.  I had a job interview there, once.  They took me out for a great breakfast but I consider myself to have dodged a bullet not having gotten the job.

I'm watching El Fin del Amor, an Argentinian series on amazon prime that kind of reminds me of Sex and the City, only with orthodox Jews and lesbians.  It's disseminated in half hour chunks so I've been watching it like popcorn.  The main character is a writer and I find her sort of annoying.  But at least the cast is interesting and the plot lines are kind of unpredictable.  Also, nice shots of Buenos Aires.  Can't say the music is all that great, though.

It sounds like a reasonable antidote to El Fin del Amor.  After 2 seasons of that I'll be ready to drill holes in an asteroid.  Too bad they couldn't have just gotten Trump to change the direction of the asteroid with one of his sharpies.

I'm not watching anything but the news right now.  Waiting for dinner.

I tend to do about 3 things at once while it's on so the full impact of the dire state of things doesn't hit me.  I had to learn from my sister that there was a tsunami warning for my area last night, so I probably should pay better attention.  I think the worst of it was a foot high surge, but nothing compared to locations closer to the earthquake epicenter.  It was 46 miles underground.  Wow.  And I thought our regular little puny 2.xx quakes centered a mile or 2 deep were something.  But, they tend to be over just about the time you notice something odd going on.

American Airlines has some free inflight entertainment which is basically samples of shows on subscription services:  I watched 2 that I thought were decent enough to want to watch more.  1) on Apple TV, Severance.  Brain implants to create an impermeable barrier between one's work life and one's home life.  Work involves a corporation that is undoubtedly evil, a fact that becomes revealed only slowly.  The question is, what will the dedicated worker bees do about this?  After 3 episodes, who can say?  Better sign up for their streaming services to find out.
2) HBO:  Get Millie Black.  This beats the pants off of Death in Paradise.  This is a woman who was born in Jamaica, sent to London as a child, thereby separating her from her brother by an abusive mother.  The mother dies, and the woman, now a sharp detective, returns to Kingston where she deals with local crime and reunites with her brother.  I saw one episode but it was enough to pique my interest.  If anyone on here has seen either one and can weigh in on them, I'm all ears.

That sounds interesting.  What's it on?
I am rewatching Babylon Berlin, which holds up to multiple viewings.
And The Way We Live Now, a 2001 BBC production that some kind souls on youtube have uploaded into 15 min. segments.  It's pretty fun although it varies from the book somewhat at times.  The actors are great.

Back to Severance.  As I watch this improbable series of plots, a few things occur to me.  The idea of a complete severance between work life and home life has certain shortcomings.  What happens when a woman is pregnant?  How to explain that to her work buddies?  It implies something going on outside that isn't explicable within the work life context.  The same thing applies to injuries and diseases.  Does the 1984 level of corporate control step in to engage in gymnastics that explain these obvious changes away?  How to explain stuff that goes on at work?  You get sick of the work environment and when they won't let you leave, you hang yourself.  If you succeed, how is the suicide explained outside?  The one constant that can't be explained away is the body of the worker bee.

There's some oddball stuff going on among the workers that doesn't make much sense either.  But it's interesting at least.  Beats "How I Met Your Mother" a show I couldn't watch for more than 30 seconds before lunging for the remote.
